The school designed a floating bridge to overcome the problem of flooding due to heavy rains
A group of young students from the Blanchard Combined School has been judged to have produced the "Best Overall Project" at the recently concluded National Schools Science & Technology Fair.
A record forty projects took centre stage as Saint Lucia's learning institutions hosted the ninth annual science fair between April 2nd and 4th, 2014.
The Blanchard school emerged on top for their innovative design - "Flood Proof Floating Bridge" - their proposal for solving the problem of constant bridge and road damage as a result of flooding due to heavy rainfall. According to the budding scientists from Blanchard, "bridges can be constructed in a manner that causes them to lift through buoyancy, as flood waters rise."
The school also won the first prize in the category of Science and Technology.
Other winners included the Vieux Fort Post Secondary School with its "True or False Logic Game". That project won the "Best Individual Project" prize.
This year's entries represented an increase from previous years with 25 projects emanating from school District Two, alone.
Each project underwent extensive scrutiny and was judged twice by 14 judges.
This 2014 National Schools Science and Technology Fair was hosted under the theme, "Young Minds Working Together To Meet Global Needs Through Science & Technology".
